北海道の東の果て、知床の玄関口にあるウナベツスキー場。北海道内からでも、そして本州からならなおさら、アクセスは決して楽ではありません。けれど、その先に待っているのは、“日本のスキー場の中でも特別”と言える体験です。
流氷を見ながら滑れる――そんな体験ができるのが、ここウナベツスキー場。
今回の滑走に参加してくれたのは、ニセコを拠点に活動する P.RHYTHM outerwear のライダー "Teppei Hirota"。
At the far eastern edge of Hokkaido, Unabetsu Ski Resort sits at the gateway to Shiretoko. Even from within Hokkaido it's a journey—and from Honshu, even more so. But what waits beyond is one of the most unique ski experiences in Japan. Here at Unabetsu, you can actually ride while looking out over drift ice floating on the sea. Joining this ride was Teppei Hirota, a rider for P.RHYTHM outerwear based in Niseko.
北海道斜里郡斜里町にある、約28kmの直線道路が続く「天に続く道」からスキー場を目指しました。上から見る接岸した流氷に感動。
We headed to the resort via the “Road to Heaven,” a 28km straight stretch in Shari, Hokkaido. Seeing the drift ice fully settled along the coast from above was breathtaking.
いざ、憧れのウナベツスキー場へ。
Now, finally, to the long-awaited Unabetsu Ski Resort.
コースは、上部は幅が狭め、下部はとても広いバーンへと変化します。
The course is a bit narrow near the top, but then it opens up into a wide, spacious slope.
特に下部は、開放感のある気持ちの良い斜面が広がっています。
The lower section especially offers open, flowing terrain that feels amazing to ride.
スキー場トップからは流氷がよく見えました。この景色だけでも、ここを訪れる価値があります。
From the top, you get a clear view of the drift ice. That alone is worth the trip.
We started with the Karamatsu Course—the mellowest run at Unabetsu.
滑り進むと途中からグーフィーなうねり。地形とスピードが心地よい。
Midway down, the rolling terrain and speed felt just right.
下部の斜面はやはり気持ちよく、絶景とカービングを存分に楽しめました。
The lower slopes were just as fun—smooth carving with a stunning view.
次に向かったのはセンターコース。
Next, we dropped into the Center Course.
ここは幅が狭めのため、あっという間にスピードが出ます。
It’s a bit narrow, so you pick up speed quickly.
上部ではスピードを抑えつつ、丁寧にボードをコントロールして滑りたいところ。
Up top, it’s key to stay in control and manage your speed carefully.
最後はサーモンコース。名前だけで好きになってしまいました。
Finally, the Salmon Course. I loved it from the name alone.
このコースは全面非圧雪。
It’s completely ungroomed.
雪は降りたてではなかったものの、しっかりとウナベツパウダーを堪能できました。
The snow wasn’t fresh, but we still got to enjoy solid Unabetsu powder.
流氷を見ながら滑れるスキー場はオホーツク海沿いにいくつかありますが、ウナベツは海との距離が近く、滑走中も景色がしっかりと目に入ります。その迫力は格別です。
行くだけでも冒険ですが、ゲレンディングが好きな方なら、間違いなく行く価値はあります。
また、このスキー場にはナイター営業もあります。ローカルの方によると、夕暮れから夜にかけての空と海のコントラストもまた格別とのこと。機会があれば、流氷と夕日というスペシャルな時間もぜひ味わってみたいものです。

There are a few resorts along the Sea of Okhotsk where you can see drift ice, but Unabetsu is especially close to the water. The view stays with you the whole ride—and it’s powerful. Getting there is an adventure in itself, but if you're into gelanding, it’s absolutely worth the trip. There’s also night riding here. Locals say the changing colors of the sky and sea from sunset to dark are something else. One day, I’d love to witness the magic of sunset and drift ice together.
